The exhibition “The Forbidden City and the Palace of
Versailles: Exchanges Between China and France in the 17th and
18th Centuries” opened in Beijing
On April 1, 2024, the exhibition “The Forbidden City and the
Palace of Versailles: Exchanges Between China and France in the
17th and 18th Centuries” opened in the Hall of Literary
Brilliance (Wenhua dian) of the Palace Museum, which will run
until June 30.
Both the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, and the Palace of
Versailles in Paris, France, have historically served as
administrative centers, royal residences, and hubs of culture
and arts, leading the zeitgeist of their respective nations.
Today, as symbols of their respective national history and
culture, they embody distinct cultural traditions and spiritual
qualities.
Through three sections—“The Encounter of the Dragon and the
Fleur-de-lis,” “The French Landscape in the Forbidden City,” and
“Chinese Vogue at the Versailles”—the exhibition traces the
historical interactions between China and France from the late
17th to the 18th century.
China and France, though separated by tens of thousands of
kilometers, spent an extensive amount of time trying to
understand each other and engaging in cultural exchange. Their
mutual attraction during that period has remained solidly rooted
within unforgettable memories and served as an outstanding
example of exchanges and mutual learning among world
civilizations. (Source: the official website of the Ministry of
